State Board of Sign Language Interpreters (SBSLI)

As of 2.27.2025, the Maryland Sign Language Interpreters Act should not go into effect until the regulations are finalized. The regulations have been submitted by GODHH, the status showing now as under review by Maryland Register staff. We are all good for now until GODHH receives an email to confirm that the review is completed. Please contact our office at gov.odhh@maryland.gov if you have any questions or concerns.

The Interpreter Licensure Portal has not been Opened Yet as of 11.27.2024. Please check here periodically. Thank you. 

  • The regulations were approved during the June 26, 2024, SBSLI board meeting, and are currently undergoing final revisions with the state’s assistant attorney general office. Once that has been completed, an updated timeline will be posted.
  • The effective date of the Maryland Sign Language Interpreters Act remains January 1, 2025. There will be a six-month grace period to allow time for application processing. The logistics of the application process will be shared at an upcoming board meeting.
