State Board of Sign Language Interpreters (SBSLI)

The Maryland Sign Language Interpreters Act is set to take effect on January 1, 2026. You can find the official regulations published on the Division of State Documents (DSD) website between Friday, May 16, 2025 – Monday, June 16, 2025 for a 30-day public comment period as of Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

Please note that, as of May 13, 2025, the Interpreter Licensure Portal is not yet open. Be sure to check back frequently for updates.

  • The regulations were approved during the June 26, 2024, SBSLI board meeting, and are currently undergoing final revisions with the state’s assistant attorney general office. Once that has been completed, an updated timeline will be posted.
  • The effective date of the Maryland Sign Language Interpreters Act remains January 1, 2025. There will be a six-month grace period to allow time for application processing. The logistics of the application process will be shared at an upcoming board meeting.
